Scalable-manufactured metal–insulator–metal based selective solar absorbers with excellent high-temperature insensitivity

Solar absorbers, harvesting solar irradiance in the form of heat, are extensively applied hot water systems and concentrated thermal such as power plants, thermoelectric generators, thermophotovoltaics. It is great significance to incorporate spectrally selective absorbers into systems, especially at high operational temperatures depress loss due re-emission high-temperature absorbers. This work computationally experimentally demonstrates a new absorber consisting multilayered stack made silica/alumina/tungsten/alumina/tungsten based on metal–insulator–metal resonance structures fabricated by magnetron sputtering method, which angular insensitive polarization-independent. The relationship between conversion efficiency, cut-off wavelength, temperatures, concentration factor theoretically investigated. An overall absorptance 88.1% low emittance 7.0% infrared solar-to-heat efficiency 82.5% identified. Additionally, it shows annealed samples maintain an extremely absorption radiation regime over least 800 °C 100.
